half sleeve based on the story of aburaakago by Joe Galloway

Abura-akago (油赤子, “oil baby”) is a Japanese yōkai that appeared illustrated in Toriyama Sekien‘s mid-Edo period Konjaku Gazu Zoku Hyakki, as an infant spirit lapping oil out of an andon lamp.

The words after “long ago in the village of Shiga” were quoted from a story about a mysterious fire called the “abura-nusumi no hi” (the oil-stealing fire), which featured in the Edo period books, the Shokoku Rijin Dan (諸国里人談) and the Honchō Koji Innen Shū (本朝故事因縁集).[2] In those books, it’s stated that there was a folk belief where an oil merchant from Ōtsu, Ōmi Province steals oil from a Jizō statue at the crossroads so that he can sell them, and became lost and turned into a mysterious fire after death. In Mount Hiei, it’s said that a mysterious fire called the abura-bō appears, and in the Shokoku Rijin Dan, this fire is seen to be the same as the “abura-nusumi no hi.”[3][4] It’s inferred that Sekien’s abura-akago was a made-up tale based on this “abura-nusumi no hi” in the Shokoku Rijin Dan and other books.[2]

Sunflower tattoo coverup

Black and grey sunflowers done over two sittings. Also covering up some writing luckily was fine lined. First sitting we got the basics down and free handing some background. I wanted the tattoo to have some natural flow which free hand allows. I used a black of black and grey wash and solids. On the last session we used a solid grey and white giving texture to the sunflowers. I was grateful for my client traveling to Leeds for this tattoo.

Zeus tattoo by Joe

Was really fun doing this black and gray Zeus tattoo for Alex. We did 90% of the tattoo and then he came back to add some small texture. We will be adding more onto this Zeus tattoo once my client decided how he wants to extend the tattoo into a half sleeve. Zeus was the king of the Greek gods who lived on Mount Olympus. He was the god of the sky and thunder. We didn’t add too much white as the skin tone give a lot of natural tones. Thanks for checking out my work. Joe

Mandala Sleeve by Joe Galloway

Its been a pleasure tattooing Chloe over the years, we first started off with just one mandala on the top of her arm. She then wanted to turn this into a Mandala sleeve. Keeping the black and grey theme all the way with this one also. Each Mandala we have added into this sleeve has a meaning behind it. The way the shapes of each pattern form around the centre differs from each layer. We only need one more session onto the back area of the mandala sleeve then it will be complete. Thanks.

Koi Fish and Crane full sleeve tattoo by Joe Galloway

We started outlining the koi and crane tattoos in summer 2018. My client was really consistent with each sitting and we managed to get the koi fish and crane tattoo sleeve completed withing 6 months. We wanted a to complement the light colours of the cranes feathers with a darker approach to the background and koi fish. really happy with the outcome of this tattoo. we used a nice ocher for the ginkgo leafs making them sit on top.
